This image represents a true story, of a rescued bear in Asia, who had been exploited for her bile for 4 years. They then cut off her paws and used them to make soup, when she was no longer profitable.
Despite enjoying her life in freedom, she still feels safer and prefers to stay in an open cage at the sanctuary, because of the terrible torture she had experienced.
The photographer Jo-Anne McArthur explains how during one of her visits to the sanctuary, she had received one of the most emotional hugs they had ever given her. When passing by the cage, the moon bear reached out and pulled her arm and hugged her tightly. She then thought: “How is it possible that you can love me, a human, after your paws were cut off to make soup…”
